Maletas y equipaje de mano en airberlin

What is airberlin's policy on carry-on allowance?

On airberlin flights, the carry-on allowance depends on the fare purchased, travel class and frequent flyer status. In addition to their cabin baggage allowance, passengers (except JustFly fare) are allowed to take into the cabin free of charge only one of the following items: laptop case, lady’s handbag/purse or gentlemen’s handbag.

What is airberlin's policy on checked baggage allowance?

Defined by the piece concept, the free baggage allowances included in the ticket price vary, depending on the fare purchased, the service class booked and the destination. All passengers are entitled to a free baggage allowance, with one exception: there is no free baggage allowance for passengers who have booked in the JustFly fare category, and all their checked baggage will be subject to a fee.

Carry-on

A single item of hand baggage may not exceed 8 kg (18 lbs), and its dimensions cannot exceed 55 x 40 x 20 cm (21.7 x 15.7 x 7.9 inches). On airberlin flights, the following carry-on allowances apply:

  • 1 item of hand baggage – in Economy Justfly, FlyDeal and FlyClassic.
  • 2 items of hand baggage – in Economy FlyFlex and Business Class, and for topbonus Gold or Platinum Card holders (equivalent: Etihad Gold and Gold Elite, and oneworld Sapphire and Emerald status).

The second item of hand baggage is allowed only on flights operated by airberlin and NIKI, but is not permitted on flights to/from the US and Canada.

In addition to your hand baggage allowance (except JustFly), you may take with you one personal item (laptop case, lady’s handbag/purse or gentlemen’s handbag) with maximum dimensions of 40 x 30 x 10 cm and a maximum weight of 2 kg. If needed, you may also take into the cabin walking aids, wheelchair, crutches or a doctor's bag.

If you would like to weigh your baggage, you can do so at the special baggage gauges available at the airport. JustFly customers must weigh their bags at the Check-in or Baggage Drop-off desks to receive a special hand baggage label. Without the JustFly label, these passengers may not be allowed to board the aircraft.

If you are flying from airports within the European Union and Switzerland, you must take into account the following, in accordance to EU cabin baggage regulation:

  • Passenger can only carry liquids or similar (lotions, toothpaste, gels, beverages, soups, perfumes, etc.) in containers with a maximum capacity of 100 ml, which must be packed in one transparent and sealable plastic bag.
  • As an exception to this regulation, you may take medicines and baby food, which must be presented separately from the rest of the hand baggage at the checkpoint. If required, their necessity must be authenticated (prescription).
  • You can also take duty free items bought at the shops in the airport the same day of the flight, provided that you have a proof of purchase.

When preparing your hand baggage, you must take into account not to include the following items: weapons, ammunitions, lighters, knives, scissors and other sharp objects.

Free baggage allowance

There is no free baggage allowance for JustFly customers, but, when at least one bag is purchased, the topbonus free baggage allowance regulations apply, whereby Silver, Gold and Platinum Card holders are allowed one or two additional items of free baggage.

The free baggage allowance depends on the service class booked, fare purchased and frequent flyer status. Special baggage allowance regulations for topbonus card holders apply on all flights operated by airberlin and NIKI. The benefits are only available to a limited extent on flights which are operated by airberlin and NIKI, but are booked through a codeshare agreement with an airline partner under its own flight number.

Additional baggage may be purchased online at the time of booking, or up until 4 hours before departure. Special rules apply for JustFly customers who can only book baggage online or through airberlin's Service Center until 48 hours before departure. Overweight baggage fees for items included in the free baggage allowance are only payable at the airport.

Sporting Equipment

If you plan to take your sporting equipment, you can check it as part of your free baggage allowance. If the baggage exceeds the free baggage allowance, you have to check it as excess baggage and pay the corresponding fees. Due to space limitations in the aircraft hold, it is advisable to register your baggage in advance. You can do this 48 hours before your flight's departure, online or by calling airberlin’s Service Center. The following sporting equipment is allowed on airberlin flights:

  • Sports or racing wheelchair for the disabled.
  • Surfing equipment (surfboard with sail and mast, canoe, kayak, kite board, etc.) packed in a soft case.
  • Bicycles (the pedals must be turned inwards, the handlebar must be parallel to the frame, and it must be packed in a soft case).
  • Golf equipment consisting of golf bags, clubs, golf balls and shoes.
  • Skiing equipment consisting of skis or snowboard, ski poles and boots.
  • Diving equipment consisting of diving lamps, compressed-air cylinders and diving belt.
  • Sport weapons and ammunition (no more than 5 kg). They must be packed separately, and you will have to pay a fee of € 50 Euros per weapon on short- or medium-haul flights and € 75 Euros ($ 100) per weapon on long-haul flights.

It is not possible to transport sporting equipment if you have a booking in the JustFly fare category.
