Brussels Airlines minors flying alone

Does Brussels Airlines offer special services for children traveling alone?

With the Unaccompanied Minor Service, children traveling alone with Brussels Airlines are in safe hands and accompanied throughout their journey, from the moment you say goodbye to them at the departure airport to the moment they are collected at the final destination by family or friends.

What are the age restrictions for the Unaccompanied Minor service?

The service is mandatory for children from 5 up to 12 years (up to the 12th birthday), not accompanied by a passenger of at least 12 years of age, who is fully capable of taking care of the child during the entire trip.

Passengers between 12 and 18 years and traveling alone may be accepted as Unaccompanied Minors upon special request from their parents or an appointed guardian or in case of doubt about his/her ability to travel alone.

Unaccompanied Minor Service

Booking the Unaccompanied Minor service is only possible through Brussels Airlines’ Service Centre. When booking and Unaccompanied Minor, connections via Brussels are only allowed if the parent or legal guardian has made arrangements for the minor to be met on arrival and on departure by an authorised adult.

Unaccompanied Minors, accompanied by an adult, must report at check-in 1 hour in advance of the check-in deadline mentioned on the ticket. The Unaccompanied Minor must have all required travel documents: an ID card with a picture or a travel passport with visa and health certifications if required. A Handling Advice Form is also required and can be filled in at home (3 copies) or at the airport.

After check-in, Unaccompanied Minors must proceed to Axxicom Special Assistance counter (Brussels airport) or to the dedicated assistance counter (at other airports). Parents have the possibility to accompany the child to the gate. If they do not wish to do so, a member of the assistance team will escort the Unaccompanied Minor through the passport control and security to the gate. In any case, the adult accompanying the child is required to stay at the airport until the flight is airborne.

On board, a member of the cabin crew will welcome the Unaccompanied Minor and look after him/her during the flight. On European flights, a drink and a snack from the “buy-on-board” selection will be offered. On intercontinental flights, a child meal will be offered to children up to 9 years. The child meal can be requested when booking for children between 9 and 12 years. A standard meal will be offered to children older than 12 years.

On arrival, Brussels Airlines’ ground staff will escort the Unaccompanied Minor through the arrival procedures. The child will be released only into the care of the authorized adult, or to the connecting airline, once their identification is checked. The person authorized to meet the child is required to be on time at the airport, otherwise additional costs (meals, accommodation, return transportation, etc.) may be charged.
