Emirates flying with babies

After how many days from birth can a newborn travel with Emirates?

Emirates will allow on board infants less than seven days old only in the case of travel for emergency medical reasons (in incubators) or if the mother is traveling on compassionate grounds.

What ticketing rules apply to children and infants traveling on Emirates flights?

Any passenger under two years old is an infant. For infants traveling on the parent’s lap or in a bassinet, tickets are discounted from the full adult fare. Tickets for children, passengers 2 to 11 years of age, are also discounted from the full adult fare.

Any infant who reaches the age of 2 after the commencement of the journey must pay the applicable child fare and is required to occupy a seat for that part of the journey.

Children between 6 and 36 months may travel in car seats provided that a separate seat is purchased for the child.

What rules apply when an adult is traveling with more than one infant?

One accompanying adult may travel with two infants only if the second infant is over six months and travels in a car seat, or is over 12 months and able to sit in a seat with a seat belt. The child fare will apply to the second infant. If this is not possible, the second infant must have an escort. For escort charges and arrangements, you should contact your local Emirates office or travel agent.

Infant Baggage

Passengers traveling with infants in any class of service are permitted to bring on board one handbag (in addition to the cabin baggage allowance) for infant food and other in-flight necessities, with a weight not exceeding 5 kg (11 lbs) and maximum dimensions of 55 x 38 x 20 cm (22 x 15 x 8 in). One fully collapsible stroller or one carrycot may be brought as a carry-on item if cabin space is available or, if not, as checked baggage in the hold at no extra charge.

On any route that does not include North or South America and routes originating in Africa, passengers traveling with infants may check in up to 10 kg (22 lbs) additional baggage, in addition to their usual baggage allowance.

On any route that includes North or South America and Africa, passengers travelling with infants may check one extra piece of baggage, regardless of the class of travel. This extra piece must not exceed 23 kg (50 lbs) in weight, with total dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 150 cm (59 inches).

Special Services

For families with young children, Emirates offers at Dubai International Airport separate family check-in desks, priority boarding and complimentary baby stroller service (twin baby strollers are also available). For families travelling with infants, every Emirates aircraft has been equipped with large overhead storage lockers, changing tables in the toilets, pillows and blankets.

There are also bassinets on board all Emirates aircraft provided on a first come, first served basis. You must contact Reservations to book a bassinet, or, when booking online, a request for a bassinet can be made in the Passenger Details section.  Bassinets measure 74.93 x 33.03 x 16.51 cm (29.5 x 13 x 5 in) in Business Class and Economy Class, and 63.5 x 28 cm (25 x 11 in) in First Class. The weight limit for bassinets is 11 kg (24.2 lbs). Although bassinets can be provided for babies up to 2 years old, babies older than a year may have difficulty fitting into them. When you request a bassinet, CoziGo may be attached to it for the duration of the flight but in Economy Class only. CoziGo (Fly Babee) is the only comfort device/sleeper that meets the safety and risk standards required of the GCAA and is therefore permitted to be used onboard.

Infant Safety – Child Restraint Devices

On Emirates flights, child restraint devices approved for use in aircraft only by any Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA), the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or Transport Canada may be used, if marked accordingly. Passengers must supply their own approved infant car seat, and a seat must be booked and child’s fare paid for infants traveling in this manner. Infant car seats may be used at any stage of the flight. At check-in, Airport Services will approve the infant car seat for use onboard. Cabin crew will assist with the fitting of the car seat to the passenger seat. For infants weighing under 10 kg either a forward-facing or rear-facing car seat can be used, but infants weighing more than 10 kg must use a forward-facing car seat.
