Jetstar Airways flying with babies

Are there any restrictions for infants to travel on Jetstar flights?

Infants cannot travel for 48 hours after delivery on any Jetstar flight. Infants less than 7 days old (between 3 and 7 days after delivery) cannot travel on Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K), and Jetstar Japan (GK) operated flights unless a Medical Clearance form is completed. On Jetstar Pacific (BL) flights, no infant less than 7 days old is allowed to travel.

Infants must be accompanied by an adult (15 years or older, 18 years or older on Jetstar Asia (3K) flights and all flights connecting to a 3K flight) or a parent. As an exception, infants less than 3 months old are not allowed to travel unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

When is it required a ticket purchase for my baby?

Infants (babies under 2 years of age) do not require a seat when traveling on the lap of the accompanying adult. On all flights, a small fee will apply:

RoutesInfant Fee
DomesticAustraliaAUD 30
New ZealandNZD 15
JapanJPY 1,530
VietnamVND 110,000 – 150,000 / USD 5 – 8
InternationalBetween Australia and New Zealand and Cook IslandsAUD / NZD 50

Jetstar Asia (3K)SGD 50
Jetstar Japan (GK)JPY 3,500
Jetstar Pacific (BL)VND 300,000 – 700,000 / USD 15 – 35

Infants must be under 2 years on the outbound flight. Even if your baby turns 2 during your trip, he/she may travel on your lap on the return flight, for the applicable infant fee (this doesn’t apply if the outbound flight and the return flight are booked separately).

You can purchase a separate seat for your infant when you want your baby to travel in his/her own car seat. When traveling with two infants, you must purchase a seat for the second infant.  If the infant cannot sit upright in the seat unassisted, it is your responsibility to provide an approved car seat for the infant.

You cannot purchase a separate seat for your infant to travel in a car seat on Jetstar Japan (GK) flights. On these flights, you cannot take a car seat with you on board, but you can check it in at no charge.

Children 2 years or older need an allocated seat always, and a full fare ticket must be purchased for them.

What infant amenities are offered on Jetstar flights?

On Jetstar Airbus A320 and A321 and Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, bathrooms are fitted with baby change tables and disposal chutes (changing nappies on seats is not permitted). However, you should know that Jetstar does not carry nappies, milk or baby formula on board. You need to bring your own milk or baby formula. On international flights, the cabin crew will heat up baby bottles whenever possible (not during food and drinks service). Also, you can prepay or rent blankets and pillows. Unfortunately, on domestic flights, heating bottles is not possible, nor blankets and pillows available.

Infant on Lap

One adult may travel with only one infant on lap. When traveling with an infant, you can book your flight online, as long as the number of infants does not exceed the number of adults (at least one adult passenger for each infant passenger).

Free bassinets are available on international flights operated with Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft only. Bassinets are limited in number. You can request a bassinet for your infant only by calling the Telephone Reservation Team.

You must check in at the airport, at which time Jetstar may require proof of age (such as a birth certificate or passport) for infants not occupying their own seat. If you do not provide an acceptable form of identification upon request, then you may not be allowed to travel.

Infants who will not occupy a seat are not entitled to a baggage allowance (carry-on or checked baggage). Also, items required for use in-flight (bottles, milk, formula, nappies, etc.) may be carried as long as they are included in your carry-on allowance.

When traveling with your baby, you can check free of charge (regardless of fare and baggage allowance) one of each of the following items:

  • A stroller, pusher, or pram.
  • A car seat, baby capsule, or booster seat.
  • A portable cot and bedding.
  • A portable high chair.

A fully collapsible stroller may be taken as carry-on baggage as long as it does not exceed carry-on baggage dimensions. However, it will form part of your carry-on allowance.

Infants with Reserved Seats

When a seat is reserved, but the infant cannot sit in it unassisted, an infant car seat must be used. Because there is a limited number of anchor straps available on each flight, you must advise Jetstar at the time of booking that you are bringing an infant car seat. Infant car seats must be attached to window seats (emergency exit rows are prohibited). The car seats must comply with regulatory requirements and are subject to inspection and approval by Customer Service Officers and Passenger Service Managers.

Baby carriers, booster seats, and slings are not permitted. In general, rear-facing car seats are not approved. They may be approved if a family member or friend sits in the seat in front. For Australian designed rear-facing seats, the top restraint points are usually too far for the straps to reach.

Australian-designed car seats must have an Australian Standard Sticker AS1754 attached,  fit on the aircraft seat and allow the seat in front to recline. These cannot be used if the child weighs more than 18 kg. Also, they are not accepted on Jetstar Asia (3K) and must be checked in. A top attachment is required, and there are only limited numbers available on each flight. Therefore, you need to book by calling the Jetstar Telephone Reservation Team.

US-designed car seats must comply with the US Standard FMVSS213 and have an FAA sticker that reads: ‘Certified for motor vehicles and aircraft.’ The CARES (Child Aviation Restraint System) restraint is accepted on flights operated in Australia, but the crew cannot assist with fitting the restraint in-flight.

Suitability will be assessed on the design and condition if your infant car seat is designed in a country other than Australia or the U.S. New Zealand-designed seats must conform to NZ Standard 5411, and European seats to European Standard ECE4L.

An infant traveling in a separate seat is entitled to any baggage allowance corresponding to his/her travel class (carry-on allowance and, if applicable, checked baggage allowance). In addition, one stroller, pusher or pram, one portable cot and bedding, one car seat, baby capsule or booster seat, and one portable high chair, which are not counted as part of any baggage allowance, may be checked in free of charge.

Toddlers

A child over the age of 2 at the time of commencement of travel is required to have a seat like any other passenger. You will need to purchase a full fare for your child. Therefore, baggage rules for carry-on and checked baggage will apply like for any other passenger. When traveling with small children, one stroller, pusher or pram, one portable cot and bedding, one car seat, baby capsule or booster seat, and one portable high chair, which are not counted as part of any baggage allowance, may be checked in free of charge. Passengers accompanying young children cannot sit in emergency exit row seats (which include all Extra Leg Room seats).

Jetstar offers a range of cartoons, movies, TV shows, and music videos for kids to watch on portable Video on Demand units. You can either rent Video on Demand units on-board (when they’re available), or book and pay for them when you book your flight, or you can purchase reusable headphones to listen to free movies and TV programs on the public screens or free audio programs.
