FrDoes Korean Air offer services for children traveling alone?
Korean air considers that a child is traveling alone when he/she is not accompanied on the same flight and in the same cabin by an adult at least 18 years of age or a parent/legal guardian (regardless of age).
To ensure the child’s comfort and safety, Korean Air provides the Unaccompanied Minor Service which ensures that the Korean Air cabin crew will look out after the Unaccompanied Minor, following a set guideline.
Which are the age restrictions for children traveling alone on Korean Air flights?
To provide assistance suited to your child’s age and travel destination, Korean Air imposes several restrictions regarding acceptance of Unaccompanied Minors:
- Children aged between 5 and 12 years may travel alone on domestic flights.
- Children aged between 5 and 11 years may travel alone on international flights.
- Adolescents aged between 12 and 16 years may travel alone on international flights – if they are traveling only on Korean Air, the service is optional and subject to an extra fee.
Unaccompanied Minor (UM) Service
Booking
It is required to contact the Korean Air reservation center at least 24 hours before the departure of the flight, and receive confirmation of your application. Your child’s baggage allowance corresponds to his/her cabin. Although normal rules apply for hand baggage, your child must be able to carry the hand baggage without assistance.
Drop-off and Pick-up
The child is to be accompanied by an adult upon departure and arrival. The accompanying adult checks in the child and fills out a service form. The Unaccompanied Minor will be lead to the staff that will take care of the minor and provided with an Unaccompanied Minor badge (this is to ensure that the Korean Air staff recognize them until they reach their destination). The staff will accompany the children through customs, immigration and security check to the departure gate. Upon landing, Korean Air’s staff will assist the Unaccompanied Minor until he/she meets an adult guardian. The service is available to passengers within 6 hour transit to other Korean Air flights. It is not available for a passenger that transfers to another airline.
If the Unaccompanied Minor is traveling to Canada, Philippines, or Vietnam, the following restrictions will apply:
- Canada
- To enter Canada, minor passengers under 18 years old traveling with/without a guardian (not parents) must prepare a Guardian Consent Form in English or French with a legal guardian or parents signatures. Without a Guardian Consent Form, minor passengers are subject to an intensive immigration interview.
- The service can’t be provided if you are planning a connecting flight, including code-share partner.
- Philippines
- Unaccompanied Minor – child under 15 years of age traveling alone without permanent resident card.
- Unaccompanied Minors and children traveling accompanied by guardians or authorized custodians other than their parents must submit:
- A Notarized guardian consent form in English.
- An application for Waiver of Exclusion Ground upon arrival.
- A copy of the traveling minor’s and parent’s passport.
- Family Relation Certificate in English.
- An entry fee of PHP 3,120 (approximately USD 62).
- Vietnam – the Unaccompanied Minor Service is mandatory for children under 14 years of age.
Fees
For domestic flights, the child fare is applied, and no service fee is charged.
In the case that the Unaccompanied Minor is traveling internationally, the adult fare will apply, and a service fee is charged:
- Children aged between 5 and 11 years – USD 100 or equivalent local currency per child each way (KRW 100,000 from Korea, CAD 100 from Canada, or IDR 1,400,000 from Indonesia).
- Adolescents aged between 12 and 16 years – USD 150 or equivalent local currency per child each way (KRW 150,000 from Korea, CAD 150 from Canada, or IDR 2,100,000 from Indonesia).
