Does Porter Airlines accept passengers to travel with their pets?

On all Porter Airlines flights, passengers may travel with their pet. Pets can only be transported in the passenger cabin, as carry-on. Under no circumstances will Porter Airlines accept to transport pets in the baggage compartment of any flight.

Which pets does Porter Airlines accept in the passenger cabin?

Porter Airlines only accepts house cats and dogs, small enough to travel comfortably inside an approved pet carrier. Porter Airlines only accepts pets that travel with an adult fare-paying passenger. Passengers traveling with infants and Unaccompanied Minors may not travel with a pet.

In-cabin Pets

On any flight, Porter Airlines will accept no more than 2 pet carriers in the passenger cabin (with the exception of Service Animals). To avoid disappointment, you should pre-book your pet on your flight, as early as possible, via Porter’s website or by calling the Porter Call Centre. However, reservation for pet travel must be made no later than 24 hours before departure.

Pets must be contained in a clean, leak proof and escape proof carrier with adequate space for the comfort of the pet. The carrier is subject to approval by the airline. Pet carriers that do not meet the following criteria will not be accepted:

  • The maximum permitted weight of pet and carrier is 9 kg (20 lbs).
  • Only soft-sided carriers are accepted.
  • The maximum dimensions of the pet carrier are 55 x 40 x 23 cm (22 x 16 x 9 in – L x W x H).

Only one pet is permitted in a carrier, and a maximum of one carrier per passenger is allowed. The pet carrier counts as your one standard article of carry-on baggage permitted on board. When traveling with pets, passengers will only be allowed one additional personal item.

Passengers traveling with pets will be unable to check in online and must see a Porter agent upon arrival at the terminal. The airline may deny transport of aggressive or distressed pets at its discretion. As pets may require additional screening prior to proceeding to passenger screening, you should arrive at least 90 minutes prior to your flight. From the moment of security screening until the arrival at the final destination, pets must remain in their carriers. On board the aircraft, the carrier must be stored under the seat directly in front.

When taking a pet out of the country, or bringing a pet into Canada, passengers are responsible for meeting all customs and regulatory entrance and/or exit requirements. Most pets travelling to the US require a health certificate from their veterinarian and proof of rabies vaccination from the past 12 months.

Fee

For transporting your pet in the cabin, Porter Airlines will charge a fee of $50 CAD/USD plus taxes per direction.

Service Animals

Porter Airlines will accept for transportation in the passenger cabin, without charge, Service Animals, provided that the animal is properly harnessed and certified as having been trained by a professional service animal institution, and Emotional Support Dogs, provided that supporting documentation dated within 1 year of your scheduled flight is presented. Passengers should carry Service Animal support documentation for presentation to authorities.

If you plan on traveling with a Service Animal or Emotional Support Dog, you should notify Porter Airlines at least 48 hours before departure. Porter Airlines’ in-cabin pet policy does not include professionally-trained Service Animals.

Service Animals may not occupy a seat on the aircraft and must travel at the feet of their owner. The seat that the passenger traveling with a Service Animal will occupy will be determined by Porter Airlines staff, in consultation with the person with a disability, so as to ensure the comfort of all passengers. Service Animals are not accepted unless the passenger obtains proper permits for entry into the countries of transit/final destination and presents them prior to the commencement of travel.
