Excess Baggage

Passengers can pay to bring extra checked baggage, but for safety reasons, if the baggage exceeds 32 kg, it should be repacked or sent by cargo. Passengers may check in up to 9 additional pieces of baggage. If you are traveling with excess baggage or the baggage exceeds dimension or weight limits, a fixed price will be charged per piece of baggage. The excess baggage fees below are one way and apply when traveling only with SAS. If you are traveling onward with a codeshare airline, other rules may apply.

Passengers can pay for excess baggage during Online Check-in or at the self-service kiosk at the airport. Because SAS Airlines is changing the check-in system, in some airports, it is not possible to pay for extra baggage at the kiosk. Passengers can still use the kiosk to get their baggage tags but must pay the excess baggage fees at the baggage drop counter if they can’t pay for extra bags at the kiosk.

Fees for extra baggage vary according to route and if you purchase in advance or at the airport:

  • Additional checked bag (max. 23 kg):
    • Online, up to 22 hours before departure – EUR 20-105 / USD 25-119 / DKK 170-570 / NOK/SEK 195 – 690.
    • At the airport, less than 22 hours before departure – EUR 55-105 / USD 65-119 / DKK 450-830 / NOK/SEK 540 – 990.
  • Overweight checked bag – at the airport:
    • 23.1-28 kg (51-62 lbs) – EUR 35-55 / USD 40-65 / DKK 250-400 / NOK/SEK 350 – 550.
    • 28.1-32 kg (62-71 lbs) – EUR 60-110 / USD 70-130 / DKK 440-800 / NOK/SEK 600 – 1100.

Sporting Equipment and Special Baggage

Passengers can check in many types of sporting equipment and special baggage when flying with SAS. The following special baggage must be registered before you fly by contacting SAS Customer Contact Center or filling out an online form: bicycle, ski/snowboard equipment, golf bag, hang glider, vaulting poles, windsurfing board.

Sports equipment up to 23 kg (equipment + transport bag) may be considered as one piece of the checked baggage included in your ticket and transported at no extra charge. If you exceed the number of bags or the maximum weight, you need to pay for extra baggage.

Vaulting poles (one pole per bag) are not considered part of the checked baggage allowance, and an additional charge applies (EUR 99-249/ USD 115-290 / DKK 740-1820 / NOK/SEK 990 – 2490).

A checked bag that exceeds 158 cm (length + width + height) is considered special baggage. Special baggage up to 23 kg is transported at no extra charge if it fits within the checked baggage allowance included in your ticket. If you exceed the number of bags or the maximum weight, you need to pay for extra baggage. You should register your special baggage as soon as possible, but no later than 24 hours before departure. If you need to register special baggage less than 24 hours before flight departure, you should contact Customer Service.

For safety reasons, each piece of baggage cannot weigh more than 32 kg. If the baggage exceeds 32 kg per piece, it should be repacked or sent as cargo.

Baggage Service

If your baggage has been damaged, a report must be made with SAS upon arrival at the airport or within 7 days of arrival. If your baggage does not arrive at your destination airport, you must go to the Arrival Service counter in the baggage hall and fill out a baggage report. If required, SAS Airlines can provide you with a simple overnight kit at most airports. Also, SAS Airlines will reimburse reasonable expenses that you have made in connection with the purchase of necessities during the waiting time. You can apply for compensation according to SAS transport regulations if your baggage has been lost for 21 days.
