What is SpiceJet’s policy with regard to hand baggage?

Except on flights originating from Jammu, Leh, and Srinagar (where the hand baggage allowance is transferred to the checked baggage allowance), all passengers are entitled to hand baggage allowance.

What is SpiceJet’s policy with regard to checked baggage?

The free checked baggage allowance and excess baggage fees are based on the Weight System and route. There is no limit to the number of bags a passenger may check. However, on international flights, any bag must not exceed 32 kg.

With regard to checked baggage, special rules apply in the case of connecting flights:

  • SpiceJet – SpiceJet: passengers traveling on a SpiceJet domestic flight connecting to a SpiceJet international flight or vice-versa are entitled to the free baggage allowance applicable on the international sector within 24 hours of flight departure to any domestic sector after landing in India.
  • SpiceJet – other airlines: SpiceJet does not offer the facility of through check-in for onward connections with SpiceJet or other carriers. The passengers are responsible for collecting baggage at the transit point.

Hand Baggage

The hand baggage allowance offered to all passengers (adults, children, and infants) on SpiceJet flights is subject to the following rules:

  • Maximum weight of 7 kg, including any personal items such as a laptop and duty-free purchases.
  • Maximum dimensions depending on the type of aircraft operating the flights:
    • Total of 115 cm / 45 inches (55 cm + 35 cm + 25 cm – L+W+H) – Boeing flights.
    • Total of 108 cm / 42.5 inches (50 cm + 35 cm + 23 cm – L+W+H) – Bombardier flights.
  • No cabin baggage is allowed on flights from Jammu,  Leh, and Srinagar.

SpiceJet will charge for any extra weight a fee of INR 300 per kg, for each one-way journey, payable at the airport when checking-in. In addition, passengers who purchase the Hand Baggage Only fare and want the check in baggage will be charged a Fare Type Change Fee of 400 INR for up to 15 kg of checked baggage (22 kg for flights originating from Jammu, Leh, and Srinagar).

Up to 6 hours before flight departure, Pre-paid Excess Baggage can be purchased online and through SpiceJet Call Center, with a discount:

Once purchased, Pre-paid Excess Baggage cannot be cancelled if not used or partially used. (e.g. if bought 5 kg and excess baggage is only 4 kg, then the remaining 1 kg is non-transferable, non-refundable and non-reusable).

On international flights, the following free baggage allowances and excess baggage fees apply. Up to 6 hours before flight departure, Pre-paid Excess Baggage can be purchased online, at the airport or through SpiceJet Call Center, with a discount. Any piece of checked baggage should not exceed 158 cm (62 inches) in overall size (L+W+H).

There is no limit to the number of bags, but no bag may exceed 32 kg.

Special Baggage

Sports equipment (skiing equipment, golf bags, bicycles, surf boards, etc.), large musical instruments, LCD/LED TVs (maximum 2 per passenger, size 39 to 55 inches), and other such large and/or out of gauge items will be considered Special Baggage. Special Baggage will be subject to a handling fee when registered as checked baggage:

For any extra weight exceeding the applicable free checked baggage allowance, normal excess baggage fees will be charged in addition to the handling fee.

Passenger traveling on a SpiceJet international flight to India connecting to a SpiceJet domestic or international flight booked under the same PNR will not be charged any additional excess baggage or handling charges for any Special Baggage at the transit point.

Baggage Services

If your baggage is lost, you must notify one of SpiceJet’s Passenger Services Officers immediately upon arrival, and they will complete a Baggage Irregularity Report. If your baggage is not found in 7 days, SpiceJet will provide lost baggage compensation in the amount of INR 200 per kg, up to a maximum limit of INR 3000, for domestic travel. For international travel (including domestic sector of international journeys), the liability for lost, delayed or damaged baggage is limited by the Montreal Convention 1999 to a maximum of 1,131 SDRs (approximately USD 1,800) per passenger for both checked and unchecked baggage, or by the Warsaw Convention 1929 to approximately USD 9.07 per pound (USD 20 per kg) for checked baggage and USD 400 per passenger for cabin baggage.
