Spirit Airlines flying with babies

Does Spirit Airlines impose age restrictions regarding the acceptance of infants?

Infants 7 days old or younger are not permitted to travel on Spirit Airlines flights. Also, Spirit Airlines will not accept to carry infants requiring an incubator or other life-support systems.

When does Spirit Airlines require me to purchase a ticket and reserve a seat for my child?

Children younger than 2 years old may travel on an adult’s lap (at least 15 years old) and are not required to have their own seat reserved.

Children younger than 2 years old who will be sitting in a car seat during the flight must have their own ticket and reserved seat.

Because one adult may travel with only one infant on lap, a second infant must travel in a car seat in a separate seat, and a ticket must be purchased.

Children who turn 2 years of age between the outbound and return flight must have their own ticket and a separate seat reserved for the return flight.

Children aged 2 years and older must have their own tickets and a separate seat reserved.

Spirit Airlines reserves the right to request documented proof of age for any passenger 2 years of age or younger. You must be prepared to provide documentation (such as the child’s birth certificate or passport) upon request.

Does Spirit Airlines offer discounts for infants or children?

Spirit Airlines does not offer any discounts for infants and children. However, an infant sitting on an adult’s lap travels free of charge on all Spirit Airlines (international taxes for lap children will apply).

Infant on Lap

If you have a child who is younger than 2 years of age and you do not wish to purchase a separate seat, your child may travel sitting on your lap. Spirit Airlines will not charge a fare for a lap infant, but, depending on destination, taxes and fees may apply for the infant. Bookings for you and your child traveling on your lap can be made online.

Only one infant sitting on an adult’s lap is allowed per passenger at least 15 years of age or older. Passengers traveling with an infant on lap cannot check in online, nor they are allowed to occupy a seat in an emergency exit row or a row in front or behind an emergency exit row.

When traveling with an infant on lap, you are allowed to carry on board one diaper bag, in addition to the carry-on allowance, and check, free of charge, at the ticket counter or gate, one car seat and one stroller that will not be considered as part of your normal baggage allowance. If space is available, the car seat may be brought on board, and the infant may sit in it, in a separate seat.

Infants in a Reserved Seat

Just as the TSA recommends, Spirit Airlines encourages all passengers traveling with infants under the age of 2 years to purchase a seat for the child. You can book your flight and purchase a separate seat for your infant online.

When a separate seat is purchased, the child must be secured in an FAA-approved child restraint device (car seat). Spirit Airlines accepts child seats bearing the approval of a foreign government or seats manufactured under the standards of the United Nations. Depending on the manufacturing date, car seats manufactured in the U.S. must bear the following labels:

  • Before 2/26/1985 – “This child restraint system conforms to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards”.
  • After 2/25/1985 – “This child restraint system conforms to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards” and “This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft.”

Seating

Neither you, nor the child’s car seat cannot occupy a seat in an emergency exit row or a row in front or behind an emergency exit row. Car seats measuring more than 15.5” x 25” x 25” may not fit in the aircraft seat, even if they are FAA-approved. If the car seat cannot be safely accommodated in the assigned seat, Spirit Airlines will try to reseat the car seat and family to open seats where the car seat can be accommodated. If the car seat cannot be safely accommodated on the aircraft (e.g. car seat too large for the aircraft seat) and the customer has purchased an extra seat, a refund will be issued without penalty.

Baggage Allowance

Infants traveling in their own reserved seats pay the applicable adult fare, and the baggage policy applies accordingly. In addition, when traveling with an infant, Spirit Airlines allows you to:

  • Carry on board one diaper bag, in addition to the carry-on allowance.
  • Check, free of charge, at the ticket counter or gate, one car seat and one stroller that will not be considered as part of your normal baggage allowance.
