Spirit Airlines minors flying alone

Is there a service offered by Spirit Airlines for children traveling alone?

For children traveling alone, Spirit Airlines offers the Unaccompanied Minor service.

Which age restrictions apply for minors traveling alone on Spirit Airlines flights?

Children aged 4 years and younger are not allowed to travel on Spirit Airlines flights without a companion at least 15 years of age traveling with them on the same flight and in the same compartment.

Children aged 5 through 14 years (inclusive) are allowed to travel alone only as Unaccompanied Minors in the conditions imposed by the Unaccompanied Minor service.

Children aged 15 years and older may travel alone without any restriction, on any Spirit Airlines flight. However, the Unaccompanied Minor service is also available for them, upon request, but restrictions will apply accordingly.

On which Spirit Airlines flights may children travel alone?

Children are allowed to travel alone only on nonstop or direct flights (flights that do not involve a change of aircraft or flight number) wholly within the United States and its territories (including Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands).

On connecting flights, the Unaccompanied Minor service is not available, and children traveling alone are not accepted for travel. Also, Spirit Airlines does not accept children to travel alone on international flights.

Unaccompanied Minor Service

Flights for children traveling alone may be booked online, but Online Check-in is not available for Unaccompanied Minors. All travel by Unaccompanied Minors must be on flights on which the child holds a confirmed reservation. Spirit Airlines will not accept to transport Unaccompanied Minors on flights expected to terminate short of or bypass the child’s destination, due to bad weather or other operational situations.

Drop-off and Pick-up

A parent or other responsible adult must bring the Unaccompanied Minor to the airport. Unaccompanied Minors must check in at the reservation counter. An Unaccompanied Minor form must be completed at the airport by someone with photo identification before Spirit Airlines can accept the child for travel. A Customer Service Agent will document the information on the Unaccompanied Minor form (the name and phone number of the parent or other responsible adult who will meet the child upon deplaning) and place a copy of this information into a pouch, the Unaccompanied Minor Lanyard. The Unaccompanied Minor Lanyard is then placed around the child’s neck and must be worn throughout the entire flight so that Spirit Airlines employees can identify the child as an Unaccompanied Minor.

Where permitted, the person dropping off the Unaccompanied Minor must obtain a gate pass at the reservation counter at the airport permitting them to accompany the minor to the gate. Electronic Gate Passes are only provided for an escort of an Unaccompanied Minor and for people who require assistance. The Unaccompanied Minor should check in at the gate at least 60 minutes prior to departure. The person dropping off the child must escort the child to the gate and remain in the gate area for at least 15 minutes after the flight takes off.

Children traveling alone will be pre-boarded and identified to the flight attendant as an Unaccompanied Minor. When arriving too late to pre-board, Unaccompanied Minors will be boarded last to ensure identification to the flight attendant.

Upon arriving at the final destination, a flight attendant will escort the Unaccompanied Minor off the aircraft and release him/her to the person designated on the Unaccompanied Minor form or another designated Spirit Airlines employee. The person picking up the child must obtain a gate pass at the reservation counter (where permitted) to proceed to the gate for the arrival of the flight. Spirit Airlines will require photo identification from the person designated to meet the Unaccompanied Minor at the destination.

Unaccompanied Minor Service Fee

In addition to the applicable fare, Spirit Airlines will charge an Unaccompanied Minor service fee, which includes a free snack and drink, of $150 per child, each way.
