Historia de TUIfly

  • Back in 1972, Hapag-Lloyd Flug was founded, and by 2006, it became one leading German holiday destination flight company, with around 6.7 million passengers transported during the year and a fleet consisting of 33 Boeing 737-700 and 737-800 aircraft.
  • Between 2002, when it was founded, and 2006, Hapag-Lloyd Express (HLX), TUI AG’s low cost airline grew to 18 Boeing 737s and about 4.4 million passengers in a year.
  • In January, 2007, TUIfly was founded as a cooperation of Hapag-Lloyd Flug and Hapag-Lloyd Express. Now, the flights are operated by Hapag-Lloyd Flug, while Hapag-Lloyd Express markets them.
  • At the beginning of September, 2009, the Federal Cartel Office approved the takeover of all TUIfly domestic routes by Air Berlin, as well as routes to Italy and Austria.
  • Since 2010, the TUIfly airline website and booking platform became the TUIfly.com Air-Travel-Portal, offering the advantage of combining in one booking the best flight offers of various airlines.
  • In 2012, TUIfly has been rated by atmosfair the most fuel-efficient charter airline worldwide for short-haul and long-haul flights.
  • In 2013, the independent climate protection organisation atmosfair rated TUIfly the most climate-efficient charter airline, as well as the most climate-efficient airline worldwide.
  • In February 2014, TUIfly received its first jet in the new «Dynamic Wave» design, after the company announced the replacement of their distinctive yellow livery with a new blue design.
  • As of May 1, 2014, TUIfly has introduced a new tariff concept. Passengers can now choose between the two new tariffs, Pure and Perfect, and new service packages. With the new customized service concept, passengers will experience more choices, paying only for what they really want on their flight with TUIfly – starting with just the flight itself up to an exclusive on-board experience with the Premium Economy package.
  • In October 2016, it was confirmed that TUIfly was in talks with airberlin and Etihad Airways to create a new company for leisure operations from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. In November, the TUI board of directors agreed to merge TUIfly Germany with Niki, Air Berlin’s Austrian subsidiary, under a new joint-venture with Etihad Airways.
  • In June 2017, TUI Group announced the end of talks with Etihad about the planned new leisure airline, but TUIfly remains open to partnerships, including mergers.
  • TUIfly is Germany’s third largest operator, only surpassed by Lufthansa and Air Berlin, operating 43 Boeing 737s.
  • There is no deadly incident recorded involving TUIfly aircraft, as of late December, 2009.
