What is Virgin Australia policy on carry-on allowance?

For domestic and international short-haul flights, the carry-on allowance is the same for all fare types. This quantity of unchecked baggage, up to 7 kg of carry-on baggage, is limited by number and dimensions. For passengers traveling on international long-haul flights, the carry-on baggage allowance depends on the fare purchased.

What is Virgin Australia policy on checked baggage allowance?

All passengers traveling on Virgin Australia flights are allocated a checked baggage allowance, except passengers who have purchased the Go fare. When traveling on domestic or short-haul international flights, passengers will have the following baggage allowances corresponding to the travel class and Velocity membership level:

Virgin Australia Domestic and Short-haul International Flights

Travel Class Fare None/Red Silver/Gold Platinum
Economy Go No allowance 1 x 23 kg 2 x 23 kg
All other fares 1 x 23 kg 2 x 23 kg 3 x 23 kg
Economy Premium

All fares 2 x 23 kg 2 x 23 kg 3 x 23 kg

Premium Economy 2 x 32 kg 3 x 32 kg

All passengers traveling on domestic and international short-haul flights are permitted to take up to 7 kg of carry-on baggage on board. They can choose one of the following options for the two pieces they are allowed:

  • Two pieces (a small bag and a briefcase), with total linear dimensions of 105 cm each (48 cm long x 34 cm wide x 23 cm deep), and a total weight of 7 kg.
  • One small bag plus one suit pack or garment bag, with total linear dimensions of 105 cm for the bag and 185 cm for the garment bag (114 cm long x 60 cm wide x 11 cm deep), and a total weight of 7 kg.

On international long-haul flights, the following carry-on allowances apply:

Carry-on Allowance – International Long-haul Flights
Class of travel Piece Allowance Maximum Weight Total Dimensions*
Economy 1 piece + 1 personal item 7 kg
(15.4 lbs)
per piece
115 cm
(45 in)
per piece
Premium Economy 1 piece + 1 personal item
Business 2 pieces + 1 personal item
The total dimensions are determined by adding together the length, width and height of the bag.

A personal item may consist in one of the following articles:

  • A laptop computer in thin satchel-style laptop bag (when in a larger bag, will not be considered to be a personal item), handbag, pocketbook or purse (of reasonable size).
  • A wrap, a blanket, or an overcoat.
  • A small camera or pair of binoculars.
  • A reasonable amount of reading material (books, magazines, newspapers, etc.).
  • A pair of crutches/prosthetic devices provided that the passenger is dependent on them for mobility.

Special Personal Baggage

Crutches, wheelchairs and others medical assistance items are exempt from the size and weight requirements. Passengers may take a small musical instrument on board as carry-on baggage provided that each instrument does not exceed dimensions of 85 cm x 34 cm x 23 cm (total linear dimensions 142 cm). The only items that can occupy a seat are a cello or a guitar. Passengers planning to travel with a cello or guitar should book an extra seat.

Carry-on baggage that exceeds weight or size limits may cause injury to the crew and passengers and is, therefore, not permitted in the aircraft cabin. Passengers carrying overweight or oversize cabin baggage will have these items checked into the aircraft hold and specially tagged. Airport checked baggage rates may apply. On arrival, the passenger will collect these bags at the baggage carousel in the arrivals hall.

Checked Baggage

Maximum Weight and Size

On any flight operated by Virgin Australia, each piece of baggage must not weigh more than 32 kg (70 lbs). Baggage that exceeds this limit must be transported as cargo. Where applicable, checked baggage that exceeds a weight limit of 23 kg will incur an overweight baggage fee and will only be accepted and loaded on board at airline discretion.

Virgin Australia’s fleet includes a number of different aircraft types, all of which have slightly different limitations with regard to the maximum size of the baggage which they can carry:

Aircraft Type A330, Boeing 737, Embraer 190 ATR 72 A320* F50 F100*
Maximum Length 3 m 1.8 m 9.8 m 2 m 6 m
*Depending on the flexibility of the article.

For international long-haul flights, total linear dimension must not exceed 158 cm (62 in) per piece (length + width + height). The following limitations apply to oversized items carried in the aircraft hold on international long-haul flights due to handling restrictions:

  • Maximum Length – 3 cm (118 in).
  • Maximum Height – 1 m (39 in).
  • Maximum Width – 84 cm (33 in).

Pre-purchased Baggage Allowance

Passengers travelling on Virgin Australia domestic and international short-haul flights can pre-purchase an allowance online, or through the airline Contact Centre where a service fee may apply up until check-in on selected flights. Passengers who pay for excess baggage at the airport at check-in will be charged a higher fee. Passengers have the option to pre-purchase up to two pieces of baggage in addition to any included baggage allowance.

Excess Baggage

Passengers should pre-purchase additional baggage allowance before checking-in. A charge will apply at the airport for any pieces in excess of pre-purchased or included baggage allowances. Fees are charged for each piece of baggage, per one-way journey, including formal connecting flights. When arriving at the airport, passengers traveling with excess baggage on an Air New Zealand marketed ticket will be charged as per Air New Zealand excess baggage rates.

In addition, please check the following general guidelines and restrictions:

  • Up to 9 pieces of baggage in total, 2 of which can be pre-purchased, may be checked per passenger on flights operated by Virgin Australia, and some destinations may have additional restrictions depending upon aircraft type or carrier.
  • The airline accepts excess baggage on a space-available basis, so, if the baggage cannot be carried on the same flight, it will be transported on the next flight with sufficient load capacity available.
  • The additional or oversized and overweight baggage is accepted on a standby basis.

Baggage Service

Passengers who have completed a delayed baggage report will be provided with a 10 character file reference number. They should keep this number as they will need it when initiating a claim or inquiring about the baggage. Passengers can track the status of their delayed baggage on the WorldTracer baggage tracing system. Virgin Australia will notify passengers as soon as the baggage is located, and deliver the baggage to the address specified when the report was made.

All damage to baggage needs to be reviewed and evaluated by Virgin Australia Baggage Services agents. Passengers are advised to report any damage to baggage to the Baggage Services office before leaving the airport. Passengers who are unable to make a damaged baggage report at the airport should refer to the reporting time limits that apply. Remember Virgin Australia liability for damaged or missing baggage is limited.
