General presentation

There are 3 Boeing 777-200s in the Austrian fleet of 38 planes. This plane is used on long-haul flights, it cruises at a maximum speed of 1030kph and has a maximum range at full payload of 11500km. It has a total seating capacity of 344 passengers, divided into two classes (342 on flights to Singapore). Austrian Airlines and their partners Lauda Air and Austrian Arrows, fly to 130 destinations in 66 countries, over 5 continents and have a total of 103 planes between them. The layout shown here is the 344 passenger configuration.
The New Business Class offers a 1.5m (60”) pitch, 180º total recline, a 10.4” personal screen, a massage function, a power point for laptops which requires no adapter and wifi (wireless internet access) throughout the cabin. The New Business class will be offered on B777 long-haul flights to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne and Sydney as from summer 2006, on B767 flights to Washington, N.Y, Toronto and Mumbai successively from autumn 2006 to spring 2007, on B777 flights to New Delhi as from December 2006, and on B767 flights to Mauritius, Phuket and the Maldives successively from 2007.
An extensive range of audio and video channels is offered on medium and long-haul flights. Airbus A330 and A340-300 (OE-LAL) are equipped with an interactive system, offering Business and Economy Class passengers 8 movie channels, 12 music channels, 10 games and several means of communication (SMS, phone and e-mail). The other three A340 belong to the non-interactive fleet and offer 8 films and 12 audio programmes. There is even a “silent” channel to provide undisturbed sleep! Business Class passengers may also borrow an adapter to plug laptops into the power supply. The available adapters are Targus company “tip”-models 6, 7, 19, 21, 24, 26, 44, 58, 68 and 73. It is best to check compatibility before flying.
On long-haul flights on the non-interactive fleet in Economy Class, audio and video channels are available on the large screen or closest monitor. On flights to Japan 3 films are shown as opposed to the normal 2.
On long-haul flights, satellite phones are available in the Economy Cabins.

The business class interior seems odd with the current trend of cocoons. The seat enclosures are only about 4ft high and appear somewhat retro. They good news is that they open up the cabin and the bad news is they don't provide much privacy. The seats were comfortable and include a massage feature. Unfortunately the foot well is too small if you have anything larger than a narrow size 8 foot. Where Austrian airlines really shine is in the service and the food. I have made over 40 trans-Atlantic flights in business and first class and I have never had better food or more attentive service. The lead Flight Attendant comes around at the beginning of the flight and introduces herself and chats a bit with each passenger. At the end of the flight she stops by again to make sure your flight was enjoyable. Austrian airlines does not use your typical airline food service. They use the same catering service as the F1 race circuit. The two meals they served were typical Austrian food and were both outstanding. They also provide an excellent choice of wines. If I had any complaint about the flight is that their infotainment screens are very glary and the selection of TV comedies is limited. We would definitely fly Austrian airlines again.

Since Austrian put premium economy in there is now the strange situation of a single business class row behind the galley with all of the other business class rows in the front cabin. The upsides are it was a very quiet flight with no other passengers passing by during the flight and it does feel very private - I generally find the main business cabin on Austrian 777 aircraft feels a little claustrophobic. The staff were fantastic on the flight and as always the Austrian business class service is one of the best provided by a European carrier. The downside - during boarding you obviously are the only row of business class that has everyone trooping past them to find their seat and during flight you are the last row served from the bar. Overall some positives and some negatives ot this particular row.

As a frequent traveler I wanted to test Austrian for quite some time. Food and service should be really good and they won the award for "best european airline" a few years ago.

Actually the staff was very friendly and committed. The seats are quite comfortable, given I was traveling economy class but seeing the business class was making me wanna upgrade next time. Food was very good too and I could sleep for the rest of the flight.

Overall an excellent airline in my opinion.

I had no major issues with the airline or the seats. The connection for videos took a little jiggling to make the sound work, but it was not a big deal. I felt I had enough space. Food, drinks, and service were fine.

Fleet is aging and these 777 inherited from Lauda Air are begging to be retired. Austrian crew are always pleasant and food service and entertainment predicatable and reliable. Always an option if needed but best to avoid if possible

Selected for 2 vs 3 abreast seating. Being in the rear meant last to exit but handy access to lavitory. Video and audio selection was fair, food good, wine complimentary. Seat width and pitch were of course too tight.
